[Shaving Muggs], (story board title "A Beard in the Hand is Worth Two in the Puss), 1953, the complete set of story board drawings including title page, series 1-129, story by Larz Bourne, director, Seymour Kneitel, animation by Tom Johnson and John Gentilella, produced by Famous Studios with King Features Syndicate, Inc., released by Paramount Pictures, graphite and crayon on paper, 8-1/2 x 11 in.; unframed,. Condition: light toning, handling creases and grime, pin holes, small tears, unmounted. Notes: "Shaving Muggs", originally released in October 1953, features the two sailors, Bluto and Popeye, arriving at the dock and in need of a shave. Their thoughts are to immediately take Olive Oyl out for a date. They start to fight on her doorstep in a typical competitive scenario. She declares that both should have a shave and a haircut if they are to go out with her. Wimpy's Barber Shop is closed so Bluto suggests they spruce each other up and they enter anyway. Popeye does a thorough job shaving off his friend's rough beard. Bluto then proceeds to abuse Popeye, first with a scalding towel. He then uses cement for shaving cream and sprinkles gunpowder over Popeye. After the resulting barbershop-leveling explosion, Popeye sees his spinach can fall nearby and, although his mouth is encased in cement, he is able to suck down the greens with his pipe. He pursues Bluto down the street only to find that Olive Oyl is on a date with the ship’s captain whose long beard she finds "utterly distinguished." The two rivals then mutually invite each other to kick each other in the rear end.; Please Note: Brunk Auctions provides condition reports as a courtesy to our clients and assumes no liability for any error or omission.
