[Popalong Popeye], 1952, 58 beautifully executed story board drawings including title page, from the series of 1-105 (approximately), lacking 47 sheets, story by Carl Meyer and Jack Mercer, director, Seymour Kneitel, animation Tom Johnson and John Gentilella, Famous Studios with King Features Syndicate, Inc., released by Paramount, graphite and crayon on paper, 8-1/2 x 11 in.; unframed,. Condition: toning, handling creases and grime, pin holes, small tears with losses at edges, unmounted. Notes: Popeye is hosting his cowboy-loving nephews on his ranch. He serves spinach at dinner, which his nephews refuse to eat. He proceeds to recount his story about how spinach helped defeat the foreman, Bluto. Bluto bullies Popeye by giving him a water gun for shooting targets. He places Popeye in a corral with a boxing bull who ultimately uses him as a punching bag. After being punched into a rain barrel, Popeye eats spinach which has come to float in the barrel. Spinach creates super strength and the creation of "Popalong Popeye". He takes Bluto's belt with bullets and makes a gun of his mouth, creating a ship in a bottle out of a stump. Bluto attempts to overcome Popeye but cannot. The nephews, rebelling against the thought they need spinach to bust a bronco, mistakenly free a ferocious steed that takes off with Popeye. They rush to eat their spinach and save the day by making the horse into a rocking horse toy. Politically incorrect but a fun cartoon result.
Missing drawings include 3, 60, 11-33, 48-52, 60, 66-73, 79-82, 84, 96.
Scenes missing include Bluto using Popeye's pipe to light his cigarette, ranch hands laughing, Bullet splitting another bullet in a target shooting contest, Bluto giving Popeye a water pistol to shoot a 5 gallon jug, a cactus growing into Popeye. Other lacking drawings include the water tornado used to get the spinach from the can to Popeye's pipe, Popeye lassoes the bull and punches him into links of "Bull-oney". There are likely two drawings missing from the end that would have depicted the nephew's rocking horse, song and Popeye's toot before the circle out.; Please Note: Brunk Auctions provides condition reports as a courtesy to our clients and assumes no liability for any error or omission.
