[Private Eye Popeye], 1954, the near complete set of 131 story board drawings including title page, series 1-156, lacking 26 sheets, story by Isadore Klein, director, Seymour Kneitel, animation Tom Johnson and Frank Endres, produced by Famous Studios with King Features Syndicate, Inc., released by Associated Artists Productions, crayon, graphite and watercolor on paper, 8-1/2 x 11 in.; unframed,. Condition: light toning, handling creases and grime, pin holes, small tears, unmounted. Notes: The scene opens with the phone ringing which Popeye, in a Sherlock Holmes costume, answers. From the phone comes a loud scream. "Garsh, I better trace that call," he says then he leaves by the window and with a magnifying glass walks on the telephone lines across town to a big mansion. The door squeaks open and Olive Oyl, crouching behind a safe, fires bullets at him from a machine gun. She then realizes that Popeye is the private eye she has called to guard her large emerald. She then opens the safe, then a piggy bank and shows him the large green jewel. A hand suddenly comes out of the wall and grabs her and the jewel. Popeye, lifting the wall, discovers the butler is the thief. However, the crook escapes and Popeye goes after him in some wild travel scenes on the ground, in the air, and eventually to France and Switzerland. Finally in a market scene in an Arab country Popeye finds a cart of spinach. After eating, he punches the butler to the Philippine Islands and then to the Hawaiian Islands and finally to Alcatraz Island. He runs back to the mansion where he returns the jewel to a very appreciative Olive Oyl. The story boards reflect Bluto as the butler but his character was not used in production. The story boards lack 7-12, 17, 23-30, 69, 74-80, 100, 114, 119 and 150. Scenes omitted in production but present in the story board drawings include Popeye hiding around a coat rack when the phone rings, people drinking martinis on the electrical wires, Olive Oyl pulling the shades and reversing a portrait on the wall, a series of nesting safes prior to the piggy bank, Popeye being knocked into the series of safes by Bluto and his eventual escape, Bluto and Popeye on a train, Bluto roasting Popeye’s ride, a goose, with his plane exhaust. Scenes missing include the Butler answering the door, the map sequence, and Alcatraz.; Please Note: Brunk Auctions provides condition reports as a courtesy to our clients and assumes no liability for any error or omission.
