(Japanese, 1903-1975) Raven on tree branch, late 1940s, black ink on paper ([sumi-e]); signed lower right and sealed [Muna], 13 x 18 in.; black frame with two archival mats. Condition: several minor foxing spots, paper generally lightly rumpled, owner-framed (not laid down). Notes: Inscription includes [shi] or 13 and [ko] or year that may refer to having been painted prior to Prof. Bennett’s time in Japan. Munakata Shik? is considered one of the greatest Japanese artists of the 20th century. This lot was a gift to Prof. Bennett from the artist. The lot includes the book [Shik? Munakata (1903-1975) Works on Paper] from the Japan Society and a Christie’s New York Auction catalog for April 21, 1989, showing Munakata ink paintings for sale.
