(Japanese, 1895-1997) Woodblock of “Stone Image of Buddha at Usuki”, late 1940s, red artist seal lower right and pencil inscription at bottom: “Usuki Stone Buddha in Kyoto” and “Unichi Hiratsuka”, a large stone sculpture of Dainichi Nyosai as it stands among other Buddha images on a hill near Oita in Kyushu, 16 x 19-1/2 in.; silver gilt frame with three archival mats. Condition: small foxing spots upper center and right margins, slight crumpling lower margin, owner-framed (not laid down). Notes: Hiratsuka Un’ichi was a leader in the s?saku-hanga movement in which print artists cut their own woodblocks and printed the prints. He conducted courses and trained artists all over Japan. In 1962, he visited his daughter in Washington, DC, which stretched into a 26-year residence in the U.S. This lot includes a copy of [Modern Japanese Woodblock Prints] by Helen Merritt that shows the Art Institute of Chicago copy of the print in the color plate section and discusses the artist’s career on pages 200-210.
