(Japanese, 1903-1975) Carp swimming against waves, late 1940s, black ink on paper ([sumi-e]) with light yellow and reddish pigment highlighting carp and waves; inscription upper right includes a reference to [koi] or carp, [kai] or monster and [mune-no] or frame of building that is believed to reference the artist, 14 x 19 in.; black frame with two archival mats, print floating on backing. Condition: 3/4 in. circles of discoloration in upper left and right corners from previous attachment to backing, several minor foxing spots, minor losses to bottom edge that do not include image, owner-framed (not laid down). Notes: The carp in Japanese iconography is a symbol of strength and endurance and a symbol for boys in Japanese families. This lot was a gift to Prof. Bennett from the artist and may have been symbolic of Prof. Bennett’s two young sons who resided with him during his later years in Japan. The lot includes the book [Munakata Shik?: Japanese Master of the Modern Print] and an [Arts of Asia] for March-April 1990 showing results of the October 16-17, 1989, Christie’s New York sale of a similar ink painting as Lot 235.
