Note: Mick Cawston was renowned for his vivid and lifelike portrayals of animals, particularly dogs and wildlife. Born in Dagenham, Essex, he was the son of a father who taught and translated sign language for the police—an influence that may have sharpened his keen observational skills. Largely self-taught, Cawston honed his craft through varied life experiences, including army service and sketching portraits in Covent Garden. His work, celebrated for its emotional depth and realism, often depicted working dogs and rural scenes, earning him recognition as one of Britain’s finest dog painters. His skill has often been compared to that of Maud Earl and John Emms.
