circa 1837, .54 caliber, round 8-1/2 in smooth bore barrel, lock plate inscribed " U.S., R. JOHNSON, MIDDN,ÿ CONN, 1837", reinforced cock, brass pan, steel furniture, ramrod and button plunger on swivel, walnut 3/4 stock, stamped cartouches to left side of stock reading "NMP" and "MPL", brass blade front sight, overall length 13-3/4 in. - Note: This is one of 1800 model 1836 flintlock pistols made by Robert Johnson in Middletown, Connecticut between 1836 and 1844, and is considered by many to be the best designed and manufactured flintlock pistol of the era.ÿ Many were later converted to percussion pistols. - Provenance: From the Collection of Ashley Halsey, Jr., Alexandria and Spotsylvania, Virginia
