possibly Alexandria area, late 18th century, each with shaped crest rail with spiral carved terminals above a pierced splat, on molded square legs with stretchers, finely constructed, one with original yellow pine slip seat with traces of early leather, rear rails through tenon, in a mellow old historic finish, 37 x 22 x 19 in.Note: For very closely related chairs with through tenon constuction, spiral turned terminals, and other closely related details, see MESDA Object Database, including S-7364, S-5912, and S-5984. One of these chairs was owned by Charles Washington, brother of George Washington.
Condition
both in very good condition retaining an old surface, typical bumps and surface wear, very minor cracks at front leg attachments, one rear leg with natural cracks and one area of restoration, some later block supports for slip seats, typical footwear at front stretchers, one slip seat replaced, one with possible repinning at seat rail joints
