(Virginia/England,1670-1747)
Portrait of Alexander Spotswood (1676-1740), Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, a late 19th century copy after the original held by Colonial Williamsburg, unsigned, oil on canvas, 46 x 38-1/4 in.; modern gilt wood frame, crackle, stretcher marks, accretion (two drips) at right, scattered light retouch;. Notes: Charles Bridges was the first professional painter in Virginia, with this painting being a faithful copy. Alexander Spotswood was most noted for establishing the first professional iron forge in the colonies, exploring beyond the Blue Ridge Mountains and negotiating the Treaty of Albany with the Iroquois Nations of New York. Interestingly, he hired two privateers to flush out the famed pirate, Blackbeard, who was subsequently killed. He was later recalled from his position and died in Annapolis, Maryland in 1740.
