(Pennsylvania/Maine, 1839-1929) Brig. Outward Bound/Hampton Roads, Virginia, signed lower right "Xanthus Smith 1865" and signed and inscribed verso with title and "Painted for Jos. S. Lovering Jr. Esq., oil on artist board, 9 x 13 in.; fine 19th century gilt wood and composition frame,. Notes: Xanthus Smith records this painting and states that "fat oily turpentine used as a medium." The original cost was $25.00.
