(Pennsylvania/Maine, 1839-1929) Brig. Outward Bound/Hampton Roads, Virginia, signed lower right "Xanthus Smith 1865" and signed and inscribed verso with title and "Painted for Jos. S. Lovering Jr. Esq., oil on artist board, 9 x 13 in.; fine 19th century gilt wood and composition frame,. Notes: Xanthus Smith records this painting and states that "fat oily turpentine used as a medium." The original cost was $25.00. The thin application of paint at center maybe the glazing refered to by Smith in his records. Literature: Harold Holzer and Frank J. The NC Sales Tax will not apply to any items being shipped out of state (unless the client resides in North Carolina) or to those clients with a resale tax number.
