Portrait of a George B. Anderson, 1864, signed verso "Wm G. Browne pinxt AD 1864", oil on canvas, 36 x 29 in.; period gilt wood and molded plaster frame, molded metal brackets at corners, 44-1/2 x 37-1/4 in.

Note: This portrait has hung in the Hall ancestral home of the consignor in Belmont North Carolina since the 19th Century. It is very likely the civilian pendant to the uniformed portrait by William Garl Browne Jr. that is also being offered in this auction.

Born on April 12, 1831 in Orange County, North Carolina, Anderson was a career soldier. He is among six generals killed or mortally wounded at the Battle of Antietam in September of 1862. He died in 1862 at the age of 31, in Raleigh, North Carolina

original stretchers and tacking edge, some loss at edges, stretcher crease at right, scratch through left part of torso, associated areas of paint loss, face appears to have been cleaned and has left inconsistent varnish coat; frame with losses to molded decoration and repairs at corners
