Note: This portrait has hung in the Hall ancestral home of the consignor in Belmont North Carolina since the 19th Century. It is very likely the civilian pendant to the uniformed portrait by William Garl Browne Jr. that is also being offered in this auction.
Born on April 12, 1831 in Orange County, North Carolina, Anderson was a career soldier. He is among six generals killed or mortally wounded at the Battle of Antietam in September of 1862. He died in 1862 at the age of 31, in Raleigh, North Carolina
