probably 18th century, possibly drawn by James Sever, ink on laid paper, one depicting the Hampshire Grants, 15-1/2 x 12-5/8 in.; one depicting the Massachusetts coast, watermark "D*CB LAUW", 18-1/4 x 14-3/4 in.; both unframedNote: The manuscript map indicating the Hampshire Grants constitutes what is present day Vermont. During the colonial period, this land belonged to New York, but in the 1750's New Hampshire Governor Wentworth began selling land for monetary gain. In 1757, Wentworth had a survey made of the 108 grants he had issued in the territory extending 60 miles up the Connecticut River, westward to 20 miles east of the Hudson (the vertical line drawn in the center of the map).Click here to read about this important American maritime collection from the Sever family and to view additional items from this collection. - Provenance: Captain James N. Sever (1761-1845), Captain USS Congress; by descent in family
