(American, 1865-1929)

The Woods, Monhegan Island, late 1918, signed lower left "R. Henri", inscribed backing verso "Robert Henri/Monhigan island"(sic), and numbered with artist's notebook number verso "288/k/2", pastel on pastel canvas (see note), 20 x 12-1/2 in.; APF carved gilt wood frame 27 x 20 in.

Note:

Exhibited: Milch Galleries, New York,  (probably) Paintings by Robert Henri, Feb. 28-March 12, 1918; Montross Gallery, New York,  (probably) Woodland Pictures by Robert Henri, 1918; Philadelphia Sketch Club, December, 1919.  Also; Exhibition Circuit: Chicago Art Institute, (probably) Paintings by Robert Henri, April 4-May 1, 1919; Milwaukee Art Museum [Institute], Woodland Pastels by Robert Henri, June-July, 1919; National Arts Club, New York, NY, 1920

Note:  the entry for this work in Henri's studio notebook refers to the medium as "pastel canvas".  It appears to be a primed canvas surface, possibly pre-made specifically for pastels.
