Durham Connecticut, 1879, signed and dated lower left "G. Inness 1879", Memorial Exhibition label stretcher verso, oil on canvas, 18 x 26 in.; original carved gilt wood frame liner, , 24 x 32-1/4 in.
Note: Exhibited: George Inness Memorial Exhibition, December 1894, catalog #128. This lot is accompanied by a letter from the Inness Catalog Raisonne Director Michael Quick, dated 2009, discussing the painting and its inclusion in the Inness Catalog Raisonne supplement. In Mr. Quick's words, "...the softness of the foliage may be an attempt to suggest the feathery young leaves of early spring. ..Using both lines of black or deep brown paint and lines of white or pink, Inness created the active, staccato pattern that gives Durham, Connecticut its lively, almost excited quality."
old wax and linen lining, areas of fluorescence at lower right, possible surface dirt layer; frame with wear and losses commensurate with age
