Mahogany Shield-Back Dining Chairs
Scottish or possibly Virginia, circa 1800, each with shield-form back with pierced splat, leaf and star inlays, horse-head seats with brass tacking over bellflower-inlaid tapered legs, each with distinctive incised inlays with oak, spruce and red pine secondary, 38 in.. Condition: very good condition overall, each with later seat blocking, one with breaks and repairs at joint of crest rail to stiles, patch and repair at one rear foot, other surface flaws, abrasions and very minor repairs. Notes: While the secondary woods of these chairs are generally associated with British manufacture, the highly distinctive incised inlays are closely related to the Pembroke table in the previous lot, which is of American origin..
