British, possibly Irish, mid 18th century, with spindle back and pierced splat over deeply shaped plank seat, on leaf carved cabriole legs with lion's paw front feet, 30 x 28 x 19-1/2 in., seat height 17 in. - Provenance: Estate of Robert K. Johnson, Aiken, South Carolina break at one spindle and two others possibly restored, minor cracks at bentwood arms with probable patch at end of top applique, break and repair at back of one front leg at attachment to seat, some possible restorations at knee returns, plank seat with scattered cracks and minor repairs including two small patches at edges of front corners, one turned stretcher likely replaced, crest attachment with some later plugged screws at underside
