(Edgefield District, South Carolina, 1860s), dark to light olive runny alkaline glaze over entire body, applied facial features including white kaolin eyes under glaze inset in bulging eyelids, single linear eyebrow above elongated upturned nose, white kaolin teeth under glaze inside open mouth with protruding tongue, pronounced ears at upper shoulder of jug, applied strap handle from shoulder to base of spout adjacent to thick collared rim, 7 in.. Condition: generally good as found condition with glaze voids and anomalies as made, shallow 1 in. loss to left ear and associated minor hairline, 2 minor rim chips, minor chip to bottom of right ear lobe, firing separation at base of handle under glaze, glaze losses at base edge as made, minor chip to one tooth. Notes: Consensus indicates production of these vessels was undertaken by working African slaves of the period. Examples of Edgefield Face Jugs with extended tongues are rare. One other known example is in the Collection of the Chipstone Foundation, (see [Ceramics in America] edited by Robert Hunter, 2013, pg 27 figure 28.)..
