Harvest Jug
(Edgefield District, South Carolina, 1860s), light olive green alkaline glaze with brown mottling, applied facial features including, one white kaolin eye inset in bulging eyelid, large pronounced pinched nose, pair of thin eyebrows, open mouth with white kaolin impressed tooth design, large scroll form ears curled around small pointed tragi, arching handle at jug top in front of thick rimmed spout, 6 in.,. Condition: glaze voids and anomalies as made, loss to right eye structure during firing,1/2 in. chip to back of left ear and other minor chip, 3/4 in. chip to upper lip, 3/4 in. chip to left eyebrow, minor chip to other ear and nose, base edge chips and wear. Notes: Consensus indicates production of these vessels was undertaken by working African slaves of the period.. Provenance: Private Collection, Atlanta, Georgia
