Edgefield District, South Carolina, circa 1850s, likely made at the Thomas Chandler Pottery, Kirksey's Crossroads, rare straight sided butter pot form, alkaline celadon glaze to interior with thick green glaze runs to one side of interior rim, alkaline celadon glaze to exterior with thick glaze runs across the front midsection of crock, applied double line and looping kaolin slip decoration to front and back of shoulder between two applied lug handles, applied single line looping kaolin slip decoration underneath both lug handles, "Chandler Maker" stamp just below thick tooled rim, 9-1/4 in. in height, approximately 29-3/8 in. in circumference

Note: In Cynda K. Baldwin's book, Great and Noble Jar; Traditional Stoneware of South Carolina, she refers to Thomas Chandler as " ..one of the area's most prolific potters..". This is likely the largest known Thomas Chandler butter pot to be offered at auction.

Condition

glaze voids and anomalies as made, minor wear on rim with very shallow and minor 1/2 in. shear flake to rim clay, some discoloration to kaolin slip as made, some miniscule flakes to ends of looping slip decoration likely as made, a few miniscule surface abrasions to glaze, tiny firing hairline to glaze at edge of one handle as made, illumination to interior of jar under black light due to variations in glaze and old residue, fine surviving example of rare form, very good condition overall

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
