Chinese Export Black-Lacquered Sewing Box
Chinese, 19th century: pair famille rose covered vases with seated foo dog finials, stylized flowers and bats, baluster vases with seated couples, applied gilt foo dog and ring handles, heavily enameled with rose floral, figures, birds, butterflies and landscape panels, circular unmarked base, 10-1/8 in.; black-lacquered octagonal sewing box, lift top with figures and a pagoda in a landscape within a field of stylized flowers, black-lacquered fitted interior with multiple compartments over a single drawer with compartmented interior, sides with conforming decoration, four carved and gilt dragon-head feet, two brass bail handles at sides, second quarter 19th century, 6 x 13-1/8 x 9-1/2 in., covered vase handles with gilt losses, some enamel wear at top rim of vases both with losses to enamel decoration; sewing box with cracks and surface losses to cover, right side, interior with cracks to lacquer and joints and loose compartment fittings, lacquer losses to front at drawer corners, feet attached with modern screws, drawer with cracks at joints.
