Corner Cupboard
attributed to Karsten Petersen, Salem, 1776-1857, single-case construction with fine original bold grain-painted surface, poplar and yellow pine with cut nail construction, fixed interior shelves, original feet and skirt, 81 x 51 x 21-1/2 in.. Condition: fine original condition with old dry paint surface, scattered abrasions and wear especially at skirt and lower doors, later interior paint, two glazed panels cut in section (possibly as made). Notes: Karsten Petersen (1776 - 1857) and his sons William (1817 - 1898) and Edward (1827-1906) operated one of the most important cabinet shops in 19th century Salem, North Carolina. Old Salem has one of Peterson's original account books, and as a result knows more about the types of things Petersen produced and the kind of work he did than they do about any other Salem Cabinetmaker.
