Clothes Press attributed to Karsten Petersen, Salem, 1776-1857, the case boldly painted in faux mahogany grain paint, yellow pine and poplar construction, upper case with paneled doors and fixed shelved interior, lower case with five dovetailed drawers and original ebonized turned feet, bottom 43-3/4 x 43 x 20-3/4 in., top 47 x 47 x 15-1/2 in.,. Condition: in fine original condition with only very minor surface flaws, minor scratches, abrasions and surface stains. Notes: Karsten Petersen (1776 - 1857) and his sons William (1817 - 1898) and Edward (1827-1906) operated one of the most important cabinet shops in 19th century Salem, North Carolina. Old Salem has one of Peterson's original account books, and as a result knows more about the types of things Petersen produced and the kind of work he did than they do about any other Salem Cabinetmaker.
