likely Eastern North Carolina or Virginia, late 18th century, with circular top tilting and rotating on a dovetailed box support, ring and baluster standard on distinctive stylized leaf, shell, and scroll carved legs with stippled background, slipper feet, oak and walnut box, 29 x 36-1/2 x 36 in.

Note: While the origin of tables of this form can be difficult to determine, the heavy, black walnut stock of this example helps clarify a Southern American origin. For closely related tables, see Bivins, The Furniture of Coastal North Carolina.

Provenance: Private South Carolina Collection

Condition

very good condition, some cracks and repairs with later butterfly patches to dovetailed box, otherwise good with minor foot wear, surface cleaned or refinished, minor stains and surface wear to top, other typical minor flaws, key replaced
