(Lawley, Alabama, 1904-1990) dark brown slip glaze, incised articulated clothing to front of jug, applied and incised hair and facial features including goatee, applied handle at back shoulder, 8 in.

Note: Norman Smith was one of the only local Alabama potters who made figural vessels. A well known signed example was said to be of Irby Pope, Perry County Alabama's probate judge. That example was possibly made as a campaign piece in the 1930s. For similar examples of Norman Smith's figural jugs refer to the Alabama Folk Pottery book by Joey Brackner, pg. 178.

Condition

glaze voids and anomalies as made, spalling to clay body on base and base edge, minor chips to base edge, miniscule glaze frit to back of right ear, otherwise good condition

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
