Chinese, circa 1750, molded porcelain pheasant, with turned head, perched on a pierced rocky outcropping, 10-1/2 x 6 x 3 in.
Notes: In 1752, the Dutch ship Geldermalsen, sank in the South China Sea, having been laden with Chinese export porcelain. This shipwrecked hoard was discovered in the early 1980s, and was famously auctioned by Christie's in Amsterdam as the Nanking Cargo.Â
For an exact copy see The Nanking Cargo, 1987, by Michael Hatcher with Antony Thorncroft, page 125.
For another exact copy see The Hatcher Porcelain Cargoes, 1988, by Colin Sheaf and Richard Kilburn, page 118. Pl. 208.  Where it is described as "exceptionally rare figures from the Geldermalsen's 'private cargo', pheasant 26.3 cm ht"
