Portrait of Son O' Battle, signed "K. Wheeler", bronze with painted wood base, 13-1/4 x 16-1/2 in.; accompanied by a photograph and the pedigree of Thorson, son of Son O' Battle and Axenbroom, framed, 30-5/8 x 11-1/2 in.
Note: According to the pedigree accompanying the bronze, Son O' Battle was the winner of ten races including the Toronto Cup, Ballston, Johnson, Ridgewood, Malverne Handicaps, also second in Excelsior, Miami Beach Handicaps and others. He sired the great Thorson, who ran 111 races and won 1st place 19 times and finished in the top four 72 times.
Kathleen Wheeler Crump lived in Canada and in the United States settling in 1926 in the Washington, DC area. She was commissioned to create portraits of the winners of the Kentucky Derby which are retained by Churchill Downs.
