Mundig with William Scott Up at the Start of the Derby Stakes at Epsom, 1835, bearing spurious signature lower left "J. F. Herring", oil on canvas, 26 x 40 in.; gilt wood frame, 29-3/4 x 43-1/8 in.
Note: John Frederick Herring, Senior is considered to be one of the finest painters of English turf racing from the first half of the nineteenth century. He painted depictions of most winners from important races including the Epsom Derby, St. Leger and the Oaks. A few versions are known of this painting, including a large expanded composition sold by Sotheby’s New York in 1996 for $2,200,000 and, more recently, a small version with the same composition. This work is a copy, possibly from a circulating engraving, a published original or from one held in a public collection.
