Note: Joseph Gilliard was an influential African-American ceramicist who taught at Hampton University, Virginia. Over the course of Joseph Gilliard's five decades at Hampton, he explored and invented many ceramic techniques that would earn him and the Institute many honors, including a Carnegie Research Grant in 1947. He participated in the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg.
