mid to late 19th century, attributed to Pietro Giusti (1822-1878), intricately carved rocaille, dentil molded and beaded surround, corners carved with sculptural busts of poets, gilt panels with applied carvings of naturalistic and Neoclassical motifs, three incised cartouches reading "SIENA," "QUERCI," and "A. QUERCI", beveled mirror plate, trefoil pierced cast iron hanger, 19-1/2 x 16-3/4 in.
scattered losses to applied carvings, tiny old insect holes (not active), one area of loss on rear side, mirror plate is likely associated, cast iron hanger with oxidation, upper corners with minor joint separation, scattered other typical wear expected with age and use
Note: lower outer edge of surround has an area void of carving that does not appear to be a repair and appears to be the same continuous piece of wood as the carved section.
