Maple Sugar Chest signed and dated by Elmore W. Williams, Davidson County, Tennessee, 1840, highly figured "fiddleback" maple throughout, poplar secondary, box interior with original divider and lock over four dovetailed drawers and turned legs, 40-1/2 x 27-3/4 x 17-1/2 in.. Condition: feet ended out approximately 4 in., old loss to front corner of lid, minor cracks to case sides, minor patch at one hinge attachment, other surface wear, stains and minor repairs consistent with age and use. Notes: Literature: Illustrated in MESDA, [Journal of Early Southern Decorative Arts], Winter 1997, p. 21, "Sugar Chests in Middle Tennessee and Central Kentucky, 1800-1835" by Anne S. McPherson. Elmore W. Williams, was a farmer and part-time cabinet maker in rural Davidson County, Tennessee. This sugar chest was made just a few months before his second marriage..
