French 'Forcing the Stag Through a River' Wool Tapestry

Tournai, France, second quarter 16th century, depicts hunting scene within a stand of trees, three mounted hunters draw swords and a lance, while hounds force the stag into a wavy river, two hunters running, one with a long spear, the other blowing a horn, gentleman and lady in conversation seated under a fruit tree and a servant presenting a letter, background depicts bucolic landscape with thatched farmhouses, border composed of fruit and floral garlands bound with ribbon, lion's head masks at upper left and right corners, 129 x 101 in. (10 ft. 9 in. x 8 ft. 5 in.)
