Pitchers Japanese, late 1940s, attributed to the Sakuma kiln, four similarly shaped handled stoneware pitchers with combinations of turquoise, persimmon, dark brown and tan glazes, 7-1/2 in. to 8-3/4 in.; with four reproduction images of period photographs of Totaro Sakuma (1900-1976). Condition: all good condition. Notes: Although these pitchers show a very distinct Hamada influence in color and design, Prof. Bennett insisted that all Mashiko pieces in his collection, except the Hamada teapot, were from the Sakuma kilns. Bernard Leach taught the Mashiko potters how to throw handled pitchers during visits to Japan in the 1930s.
