Goblet
American, 1857, typical form with engraved decoration, gilt interior, marks for Gorham, inscription "Presented to/C. P. Aimar/of the Vigilant Fire Engine Co./July 3rd 1857.", 4.87 oz. T., 6 in., foot bent and pushed in, dents, light scratches. Notes: Charles Pons Aimar (1826–1905, Charleston, SC) was the principal of G. W. Aimar and Company, a very successful pharmaceutical firm at the corner of Vanderhorst and King Streets for many years. He was an influential and prosperous resident of Charleston.
Aimar was a member of Charleston’s volunteer Vigilant Fire Company, serving in various capacities over the years from their location at 46 State Street. Vigilant moved to number 33 State Street in 1849 and ceased operations in 1882 when the city of Charleston took over their responsibilities. Both buildings still stand..
