Opium Chair
Chinese or possibly export, 18th or 19th century, dense figured hardwood throughout, possibly [huanghuali], cylinder-form crest with prunus-carved ends, reeded reclining back with foliate base, shaped arms, pull-out footrest with carved skirt, tenon construction, 33 x 28 x 40 in., one side brace for footrest replaced (some front feet and stretchers with unused mortise holes from unknown device or bracing now lacking), some areas of varnish bloom and finish distress, other typical shrinkage, minor surface wear and repairs.
