(Edgefield, South Carolina, b. circa 1800, d. after 1873) likely made at Lewis Miles Stony Bluff Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850s, olive green alkaline glaze, thick glaze runs at side of body, possible finger marks in glaze at base edge, tilted ovoid form, two slash marks and possible indiscernible "7" or partial "L" in script at shoulder below neck, angled applied strap handles at shoulder, short curved neck, semi rounded rim, 17-1/2 in. tall, 46 in. circumference

Provenance: Private Collection

note: The Greenville County Museum has a signed and dated Dave jug with "L7m" script below the spout, Lewis Miles middle initial was "J" therefore the reason for the inserted "7" is unknown. There is speculation as to whether there are indiscernible initials or script adjacent to the handle of this jar.  We have printouts of the photos from the museum piece on file.

Condition

glaze voids and anomalies as made, surface abrasions and wear around the belly of jar, other minor glaze frits, 2 and 2-1/2 in. clay body chips to lower jar, 4 in. rim restoration that does not illuminate under black light, 6 in. "Y" shaped hairline down from rim past handle to shoulder, evident in interior, another 5 in. "y" shaped hairline down from rim mid jar, evident in interior, 5 in. firing hairline on lower body continuing on to base, illumination to exterior of jar possibly due to residue
