possibly Maryland or Northern Virginia, 18th century, dense mahogany throughout, shaped crest over a pierced and scroll-carved splat, seat frame set with scrolled returns, period slip seat, molded square legs, 38-1/2 x 22 x 21-1/2 in., minor cracks and patches to shoe and splat, seat frame with later bracing, minor cracks at one front knee, other surface wear and abrasions consistent with age and use.
