(PA/NY/SC/France, circa 1760-1822) Portrait of a Young Gentleman, circa 1810, not apparently signed, watercolor and gouache on ivory, 2 x 1-1/2 in.; gold bezel frame (tests 14k, 22.5 grams), set as a brooch not removed from bezel, some flaking in jacket and dust under glass; bezel frame with abrasions, dents. Notes: Pierre Henri was ship-wrecked in the West Indies and later traveled to New York in 1788. In 1789, he married the daughter of a Philadelphia Captain, Peter Osborne. Between 1789 and 1820 he traveled through the east including Charleston and New Orleans. This portrait shows the hand of a French artist by the opaque neutral background. Henri was known for placing the subject's head high on the ivory. They are generally strongly delineated with slightly curling mouths. The light blush on pale skin tones is reminiscent of other portraits by Pierre Henri. ?This lot contains animal or plant material that may be restricted under federal, state and/or local law.
