(Massachusetts, 1775-1856)
Important Historical South Carolina Portrait of Captain John Gibbes Barnwell (1778-1828), Grandson of the founder of Beaufort, South Carolina, unsigned, oil on canvas, 29 x 24-1/2 in.; gilt wood and composition frame, lined with wax and linen, restrtetched on old stretcher, craqulure, retouch at repairs; frame with losses. Notes: John Gibbes Barnwell was the son of General John Barnwell (B. Jul. 15, 1748 - D. Aug. 27, 1800), & Anne Hutson (B. Jan. 11, 1755 - Oct. 21, 1817), and a grandson of Col. "Tuscarora Jack" or "Tuscarora John" Barnwell (B. 1671 - D. 1724), the founder of Beaufort, SC. A relative of the sitter stated that he "spent most of his time looking after and tending to his six plantations in the Beaufort, SC area. He rose to the rank of Captain during the War of 1812, but saw little action. He is buried in Beaufort, SC, at St. Helena's Churchyard Cemetery."
Although the painting does not appear to be recorded in the published partial records of Cephas Thompson's work, some scholars have noted the many stylistic similarities in this portrait, including the strongly 'dotted' eye.
