(19th century) Portrait of Major Luther Giddings (Maryland/Ohio, 1823-1884), unsigned, oil on canvas, 29-3/4 x 25 in.; gilt wood and composition frame, lined, crackle, retouch; frame with abrasions and losses. Notes: Major Luther Giddings served in the 1st Regiment Ohio Volunteers during the Mexican War. He is noted for successfully protecting the vital supply line to General Zachary Taylor and his troops between Monterey and the Rio Grande following the capture of Monterey. A leather bound scrapbook owned by Major Giddings accompanies the lot and includes newspaper article accounts of the fight at Ceralvo with General Urrea. Newspaper clippings alos detailing the events of March 8 in Cincinnati that awarded Major Giddings with a presentation sword by the Ames Manufacturing Company "costing $650." The accompanying sketch titled "Hd @n 1st Regt. Or at Camp near Monterrey/Head Quarters 1st Regt Or/Nov 20th/46" is presumed by Major Giddings, pencil on paper, 7-1/4 x 12in. creases, foxing, light toning and handling grime
