probably Dutch, 17th century, with early New York History, oak, with later gum lid and later cedar and poplar bottom boards, riven and paneled construction with wrought nails, applied bosses and moldings, inlaid and with unusual applied tracery decoration largely obscured by early grain paint, original wrought iron carrying handles, 25-1/2 x 48 x 20-1/4 in.

Provenance: Gift of Mary van Kleeck, Woodstock, New York, 1951; Property from the Brooklyn Museum

lid and bottom boards are likely 18th century replacements, lid with large chip at front corner (piece loose but present, one batten also loose but present and likely an old replacement), retains original snipe hinges with additional iron strap hinges added, lacking interior till, original surface with likely later paint, scattered losses to inlay and applied tracery decoration, minor water damage at feet (no evidence of reduction), lacking base molding, later strip at one backboard, lid top with typical abrasions
