probably Virginia, signed top, Elizabeth M Johnston 1829" above several bands showcasing various stitches and letters, silk on linen, 9-1/2 x 8 in., (sight); later wood frame. Condition: extensive fading, small hole bottom center, scattered stains. Notes: Sampler attributed to Elizabeth McCaw Johnston, born 1807 in Richmond Virginia. She married John Symington in 1830 and had 12 children, her daughter Mary married General William Boggs who served in the Confederate Army.. Provenance: By descent in the Sprunt and Taylor families of Wilmington and Winston Salem, North Carolina
