Going to Church, 1879, signed lower right "Xanthus Smith 1879" and verso under lining with transcription, oil on canvas, 12-1/8 x 10 in.; 19th century gilt wood and composition frame, lined with wax and linen, restretched on original stretcher, scattered light retouch, craquelure; frame with wear, losses to composition. Notes: The certificate from Robert D. Schwarz indicates "A painting with the same title as ours was Smith's 1880 entry in the Annual Exhibition of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts". Lot is accompanied by the photo certificate from Schwarz Gallery.
