(American, 1900-1967)
Orleans Alley, signed lower left "Spratling", etching, plate 6-1/4 x 4-3/4 in.; wood frame, 11-1/4 x 9-1/4 in.
Note:
William Spratling was a writer, artist, pilot, adventurer and is possibly best known as a designer of silver jewelry and silverware. While teaching at Tulane University he found a roommate to share his apartment in the French Quarter - an aspiring writer named Bill Faulkner. The two men became part of New Orleans' vibrant literary and artistic scene. Spratling supplemented his Tulane salary by writing articles and selling his drawings to a number of architecture and travel magazines, and he illustrated books for his friends. This is likely a proof for one of those illustrations.
