18th and 19th century, autograph of South Carolina Governor in dark bold ink on a partially printed document dated "8th Day of February, 178."; along with a later colored steel engraving of Major General William Moultrie in his Revolutionary War Continental Army dress uniform, which reads "From the Original Painting by Chappel"; gilt frame, 18-3/4 x 13-3/8 in.

Notes: Maj General William Moulltrie (1730-1805) was a planter and politician who became a general from South Carolina in the American Revolutionary War. As colonel leading a state militia, in 1776 he prevented the British from taking Charleston, and Fort Moultrie was named in his honor.

After independence, he advanced as a politician; Moultrie was elected by the legislature twice over a period of years as Governor of South Carolina (1785–87, 1792–94), serving two terms.

Accompanying lot is purchase receipt from 1989.
