Study for The Flight of Night, signed lower left "WM Hunt", oil on canvas, 16 x 20 in.; possibly original period carved wood frame, 27 x 31-1/4 in.
Provenance: Collection of Barbara Novak, New York
Note: The Flight of Night features in one of the most enigmatic stories in nineteenth century painting. Hunt's planned large scale mural for the New York State Capitol was a landmark in mural painting, but was sadly plagued by tragedy, and we can now only know it from drawings and oil studies such as this one. Although completed in 1879, the artist perished not long after, and the mural itself was destroyed ten years after completion. It has fascinated art historians ever since.
