Card Case American, 1909, case presented to attendees at a special retirement dinner for New York's District Attorney, William Travers Jerome, rectangular with hinged lid, gilt interior, front with applied medallion with impression of William Jerome bust and engraved "MAY·7·MCMIX", back has autographs of its presenters engraved on back including S. L. Clemmens (Mark Twain), Joseph H. Choate, David H. Greer, Edward M. Shepard, Thomas Hastings; R. Fulton Cutting; George M?bury, Austen F. Fox, F. P. Dunne, William Rand Jr., C? Abron, Elbridge T. Gerry, Norman Hapgood, Jno. W. L. Nash, Henry W. Taft, Walter Danrich, marks for Battin & Co. (Newark, New Jersey, 1896-1927), base marked "Cross", 1.87 oz. T., 3-1/2 x 1-3/4 x 1/4 in., wear, dents. Notes: Mark Twain was noted as having given a speech at the dinner for Jerome whom he greatly admired. William Travers Jerome was well-known for prosecuting Harry K. Thaw, the murderer of Stanford White.
