Memminger, 1803-1888, lawyer, statesman and secretary of the Confederate Treasury who emigrated with his mother and her parents to Charleston in 1892. After the war, Memminger resigned his office and sought refuge with his family in their home "Rock Hill", Flat Rock, North Carolina, in what would become the Carl Sandburg home, Connemara. At the age of eleven, he was adopted by Thomas Bennett, later governor of South Carolina, and was reared in an atmosphere of refinement and opportunity. M. Lucian Memminger was a veteran of 37 years in the Consular Service before retirement..
