(American, 19th Century)
oil on panel, not visibly signed, inscribed in graphite on verso in what is presumably the artist’s hand, “View on the Monackesy [sic] River”, 20-1/2 x 28-1/2 in.; modern wood frame, 23-1/4 x 31-3/4 in.
Note:
It is likely that this scene was painted in the mid 19th Century, based on the clothing of the figures in the foreground and the mix of woodlands and open fields as then depicted. Painted by an as-of-yet unidentified artist, the artist’s viewpoint can clearly be established as a site along the Monocacy River looking west to the Catoctin Mountains at a point just south of historic Frederick, Maryland. The area from which the artist sketched or painted became part of the contested ground upon which the battle of Monocacy was fought in 1864, part of which is now protected by Monocacy National Battlefield Park. An extremely rare and early landscape painting of western Maryland.
