British or Continental, probably 16th century, cupboard or aumbry, oak throughout, central door with three pierced and carved sunburst motifs, early iron lock, flanked by three tiers of pierced Gothic arches, resting on trestle feet, 52 x 43 x 13-3/4 in. - Provenance: possibly Blumka Gallery Medieval Art, New York, early 1960's (accompanied by appraisal from Leopold Blumka for a Gothic walnut chest with fine carving, Flemish, 16th century at $1,500); Estate of Paul W. Doll, Jr., Lake Toxaway, North Carolina
Condition
appears to have very good integrity overall, patch to lower corner of door (at hinge), early iron lock possibly associated, backboards with pest damage and some later nailing, other scattered pest damage at feet, other expected warping, cracks, and wear, possible old strip patch at back edge of top, top and shelves with some later color but appear to be original
